1. What the warranty covers
The Key Crafters warranty covers defects in workmanship and in the key, remote or fob we have supplied. If something we made or programmed stops working through no fault of the customer or the vehicle, we will repair or replace it free of charge — subject to the terms below.
Typical things we cover
- A cut key blade that breaks, snaps or wears out under normal use within the warranty period.
- A programmed transponder or remote that loses synchronisation with the vehicle through no customer fault.
- A refurbished remote shell that develops a fault in its buttons, housing or cut blade under normal use.
- A cloned or programmed module (ECU, BSI/BCM, FRM, gearbox module, steering lock, etc.) that fails to operate correctly as a direct result of our work.
In short: if it's something we did, made or supplied, and it stops working through no fault of yours or the vehicle, we'll put it right.
3. Warranty service area
Key Crafters is a mobile auto-locksmith business based in Crook, County Durham. We carry out warranty repairs free of charge within 5 miles of the address where the original work was performed (typically the customer's home or business address recorded on the invoice).
Why this matters: if you are away from your original install address — on holiday, visiting family, working in another region — a warranty call-out to that location is not free. A travel surcharge will apply, as set out below.
Distance is measured as the driving distance between the original install address on file and the location the customer is requesting the warranty repair at. We use Google Maps' standard driving route to calculate it.
5. What isn't covered
The warranty covers our workmanship and the parts we supplied. It does not cover items outside our control. The following are not covered:
Batteries
Coin-cell batteries (CR2032, CR2025, CR2450 and similar) are not covered under warranty. They are a consumable item, are widely available at supermarkets, hardware shops and online for a few pounds, and can be changed by the owner in under a minute. If your remote stops working and a fresh battery brings it back to life, that is the expected behaviour.
Accidental damage, drops and water damage
Damage caused by dropping the key or fob, running it through a washing machine, immersion in water, crushing, chewing (by pets or children), exposure to extreme heat, paint, solvents or any other physical or environmental damage is not covered.
Loss or theft of the key
If the new key or remote is lost, stolen, misplaced or otherwise no longer in your possession, that is not a warranty matter. We are happy to cut and programme a replacement, but it will be quoted as a new job (spare key, or all-keys-lost if applicable).
Vehicle-side faults
Faults that originate from the vehicle itself — including but not limited to ignition barrel failure, BCM/BSI failure, immobiliser failure, wiring faults, ECU failure not caused by our work, dead vehicle battery, alternator faults, CAN bus issues, and software faults from the manufacturer — are not covered. Where a vehicle-side fault is suspected, we will diagnose and quote the repair separately.
Third-party tampering or unauthorised reprogramming
If any other locksmith, garage, dealer, tuner, or third party has worked on the key, immobiliser, ECU, BCM, BSI or related modules of the vehicle since we carried out the original job, the warranty is void on the affected work. This includes attempted reprogramming, unauthorised key adding, immobiliser bypass attempts and module replacements by anyone other than Key Crafters.
Wear and tear beyond normal use
Commercial, fleet, taxi, hire and high-use applications (more than approximately 5 vehicle starts per day on average) may experience accelerated wear on remote buttons and key blades. Wear consistent with that level of use is not covered. We can quote refurbishment work at our standard rates.
Acts beyond our control
The warranty does not cover fire, flood, theft, vandalism, road traffic accident damage, manufacturer recalls of the vehicle or its software, or any event outside the reasonable control of Key Crafters.
