Why VAG keys cost more than mainstream brands
Volkswagen Audi Group — VAG — covers Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, SEAT, Cupra and the commercial vans that share their platforms. They share platforms, electronics and security architecture, which is why we treat them as one family. They also share one thing customers don't always expect: VAG vehicles are some of the most security-locked vehicles on the road, which means key work takes longer and costs more than, say, a Ford or a Vauxhall.
The reasons it costs more:
- Component Protection. From roughly 2010 onwards, Audi (and gradually the rest of VAG) introduced Component Protection — a system that ties major modules including the immobiliser to the original VIN. New keys must be authorised through online manufacturer servers before they'll start the car.
- MQB platform security gateway. Most Golf 7 / A3 8V / Octavia 3 onwards cars sit on the MQB platform with a security gateway between the OBD port and the rest of the car. You can't just plug in any old tool — it has to handshake through the gateway first.
- IMMO5 immobiliser. Most 2014+ VAG cars run IMMO5, which uses rolling-code cryptography. Cheap aftermarket tools simply don't read it. You need genuine VAS, ODIS, or specialist equipment like CGDI / Xhorse / OBDSTAR with the right adapters.
- Timed waiting periods. All-keys-lost jobs on newer VAG cars often force a manufacturer-imposed waiting period (anywhere from 17 minutes to 24+ hours depending on year). That's not us being slow — it's the car's anti-theft timer.
What we cover across the VAG range
If you've got an Audi, VW, Skoda or SEAT we can almost certainly help — including the harder jobs main dealers quote four-figure prices for. Quick brand summaries below; full per-brand pages linked at the bottom:
Audi
From the early A3 and TT with the simple ID48 transponder, right through to the latest A6/A7/A8 with MMI-integrated keys. We handle Component Protection, BCM2 cloning where required, and all-keys-lost on Q5, Q7, A4 B9, A6 C7/C8 and the rest. Audi key programming details →
Volkswagen
Polo, Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Touran, Touareg, Caddy van, Transporter, Crafter — all done routinely. MQB Golf 7/8, IMMO5 Polo 6R, older Golf 5/6 ID48 and the commercial Crafter (which shares its platform with the Mercedes Sprinter on older models). VW key programming details →
Skoda
Fabia, Octavia, Superb, Karoq, Kodiaq, Yeti. Mechanically identical to their VW siblings under the skin — same MQB, same security gateway, same IMMO. Skoda key programming details →
SEAT & Cupra
Ibiza, Leon, Ateca, Arona, Tarraco, Cupra Formentor. Same toolset and procedures. SEAT key programming details →
Spare keys vs all-keys-lost on VAG cars
Three different jobs, three different price brackets — particularly stark on VAG:
| Job | Older VAG (pre-2010) | Modern VAG (MQB / IMMO5) |
|---|---|---|
| Spare key with working key present | £180–£250 | £250–£400 |
| Lost-key replacement (1 of 2) | £200–£300 | £300–£450 |
| All keys lost | £300–£450 | £450–£600+ |
These are fully fitted prices at your vehicle, including key blank, cut, programming, online authorisation where required, and 12-month warranty. We quote a fixed price before we travel — no surprises on the day.
What we bring to your kerb
VAG work is tool-intensive. On the van we carry:
- VXDIAG VCX SE with ODIS-Service and ODIS-Engineering for genuine manufacturer-level access including Component Protection and online SVM
- CGDI Prog & Xhorse VVDI2 with the VAG OBD package for IMMO3/4/5 programming, MQB key learning and dealer key generation
- HU66 / HU162 / HU66T cutter for the laser-cut and dimple blades VAG has used over the last 25 years
- Full key-blank stock — flip remotes, proximity remotes, KESSY smart keys and emergency blade keys for every common Audi/VW/Skoda/SEAT model
- BCM2 cloning rig and Audi A4/A5 B8 specialist tooling for the harder Audi jobs where the dashboard or immobiliser has to come out
When the dealer is your only option (rare)
We're upfront about this. There are a small number of jobs we'll politely send to the dealer:
- Brand-new MQB-evo / PPE platform cars (most 2023+ Audi e-tron, Q6/Q8 e-tron, Porsche Macan EV) where the online security stack hasn't been cracked by the aftermarket yet
- Specific Audi MMI Navigation Plus units that need a fresh component-protected pairing only Audi can issue
For everything else from 2024 backwards we've got you covered.
Coverage area
We cover Durham, Bishop Auckland, Crook, Darlington, Newcastle, Sunderland, Consett, Stanley, Chester-le-Street, Spennymoor, Stockton, Hartlepool and everywhere in between. No callout fee inside ~15 miles of DL15. Further out is fine — we just add a small mileage contribution.
Frequently asked questions
Can you really do all-keys-lost on a 2020 Audi/VW/Skoda?
Yes — most of them, kerbside. We use VXDIAG with ODIS plus CGDI/Xhorse for IMMO5 generation. The catch is the manufacturer-mandated waiting period — typically 17 minutes to several hours depending on the exact car. You'll usually be driving the same day. We quote a fixed price before we travel.
How much for a spare Audi key?
Most spare Audi keys we cut and program at your kerb come in between £250 and £400 fully fitted. The cheapest end is the older B8 A4/A5 platform; the higher end is the modern Q5/Q7/A6 with proximity / KESSY keys and Component Protection authorisation. Phone us with the reg and we'll quote a fixed price.
Do I need to take my VW to the dealer for a new key?
Almost never. The dealer will charge £400–£900 plus the cost of recovery to get the car to them if you're all-keys-lost. We come to your driveway, do the same job with the same manufacturer-spec tooling, and charge 40–60% less. We're not a cheaper substitute — we're the same job, mobile.
What is Component Protection and does it stop you?
Component Protection ties major modules to the VIN over Audi's online server (and increasingly VW's too). It does NOT stop us — we have ODIS-Service with the online SVM/GeKo subscriptions needed to authorise new keys. It does mean the job takes a bit longer and online connectivity has to be solid at the kerb.
Can you program keys for VW Crafter and Transporter vans?
Yes — both. Crafter is currently a VW-platform van (modern ones share with the new VW MAN heritage; older 2006–2017 Crafters share with Mercedes Sprinter). Transporter T5, T6 and T6.1 are all routine for us. We carry the right blanks and remotes for all of them.
Will programming a new key delete my old lost key?
Yes — and we always recommend it when one of your originals is unaccounted for. We delete the lost key from the immobiliser so it can no longer start the car, even if someone finds it. Standard practice, included in the price.
Do you work on Cupra and the new electric models?
Cupra Formentor, Born and the Leon Cupra variants — yes. ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 and the e-tron lineup — most of them yes, but the very latest 2024+ ID-series with the updated SSP platform we may have to assess case-by-case. Phone us with the reg and we'll tell you straight away.
